THE El Ayachi Peak (3,737 m.)
is the highest peak in the Eastern High Atlas range and marks the last frontier before crossing into the heart of old Morocco. Here, amid the immeasurable silence of the pre-Sahara, is an all-forgotten world of fortified villages (Ksour) and Berber castles (Kasbahs). High peaks force the clouds to disperse large amounts of rainfall; therefore, the High Atlas has many fertile valleys surrounded by rivers and waterfalls. It is an awesome land of breathtaking mountains through which rivers have driven two thin wedges of fertility, as enticing as any mirage.
